Occasionally, the Embassy Consulate offices do not provide such services or are located far away from where the marriage will take place. It as become a common practice to prepare the Single Status Affidavit for U.S Citizens prior to their departure abroad. In some instance, when the foreign party (U.S Citizen) has been married and then divorced an authenticated copy of the divorce decree may be requested by the foreign authorities.

Getting al the documents before hand saves a lot of time and in many cases money. For instance, when the Embassy or Consulate refuses to notarize the Single Status affidavit one will have to fly back to the States and get the documents here. Another important aspect of marriage overseas is to know the entire requirements beforehand. The reason for this is the fact that the Consulate nor the Embassy will be able to authenticate Divorce Decree or any other document. They simply do not have the authority to do so.
